Hello and welcome to Year 5!

This year Mr McDermott and Mrs Maguire will be your Teacher and Learning Support Assistant. We are both really excited about all of the challenges ahead. We look forward to inviting the parents in at various points throughout the year.

Remember that P.E is on Tuesday and Friday. Home learning goes home Friday and is due back on Wednesday. Creative projects will be given out at the end of each half term.

What is happening in Year 5?

Autumn 1 – Class newsletter

In Year 5 we develop reading, writing and maths skills daily, using the new national curriculum as the basis of our planning.

In English we learn about different story types including stories from other cultures, as well as poetry and instruction writing.  The documents below contain details of what is covered each term.

In Year 5 we focus on:

  • Number, place value, approximation and estimation
  • Addition and subtraction
  • Multiplication and division
  • Fractions, percentages and decimals
  • Measures
  • Geometry
  • Data

Children are expected to solve a wider range of increasingly complex problems, involving larger integers (numbers).  At Merritts Brook we are focusing on fluency, problem solving and reasoning in order to give our learners greater depth and understanding within Maths.

A sneak peak of this year’s topics is below – just enough to wet your appetite:

Beast Creator

A bug, a creepy-crawly, a beast.  He’ll tickle your skin then go in for the sting!  Discover the world’s deadliest beasts and create a predator that saves the world from an aphid invasion.  This topic will have a Science and D&T focus.

Peasants, Princes and Pestilence

Flee your fields, close your doors and pull up the drawbridge: the dreaded and deathly ‘Great Pestilence’ is here!  Can you smell a rat?  Get out of there!  This topic has a History focus.

Journey through space, the final frontier….Navigate beyond the Sun, the magnificent, blazing star at the centre of our solar system.  Are we alone or are there other life forms out there?  This topic has a Science focus.

Time Traveller

Tick, tock, tick, tock…the hands of the clock never stop.  Take a good look at yourself.  How has your face changed since you were born and how will it change as you get older?  Can you photograph it, change it, age it?  This topic has an Art & Design focus.

Let’s grow!  A crispy carrot, a luscious lettuce or a tasty tomato.  Dig deep and put your back into it, making your own tubs and planters and nurturing your greens. This topic has a Geography focus.

Let’s travel back 5000 years to the dusty realms of ancient Egypt.  Cruise along the Nile, entering a world of mysteries and curses, mummies and kings.  Who knows what treasures we will find. This topic has a History focus.

On Thursdays children in Year 5, who have expressed an interest, will have the opportunity to play the ukulele with our expert Mr Reid.

In the Autumn term we cover the dispositions of Compassion and Commitment.  We consider what it would be like if no-one cared for the world and how Christians and Sikhs show their generosity.  We also examine what hopes people have for the future and how Christians and Muslims describe their ideal world.

In the Spring term we cover the dispositions of Contemplation and Community.  We ask if the truth matters and look at Christian teaching about honesty.  We explore Christian participation in the world and look at the teachings of putting other people first.

In this term we address the dispositions of Choice and Creativity.  The children will consider what influences their behaviour and look at Buddhist and Christian teachings on responding to anger.  Finally we shall explore how and why people say ‘thank you’ and look at the different ways Christians and Muslims say thank you.

The class have fortnightly French lessons, following the Rigalo scheme for French.

As part of our PSHCE provision, we use the Dorothy Dot Programme.  This helps prepare our children for life in the 21st Century.

During the school year the following PE topics are taught. For more details about each area please visit the PE section of our academy website.
